Ethereum’s highly anticipated Pectra upgrade has successfully gone live, delivering the most significant performance improvement in the network’s history.

Key Improvements

The Pectra upgrade combines two major EIPs (Ethereum Improvement Proposals):

  • EIP-7702: Account abstraction — users can now interact with dApps using any token for gas, not just ETH
  • EIP-2537: BLS12-381 precompiles — cryptographic operations run 10x faster on-chain

The result: average gas fees have dropped from $0.85 to $0.17, and the network now handles approximately 100,000 transactions per second (up from 30 TPS pre-merge).

Real-World Impact

DeFi protocols are already benefiting:

  • Uniswap: Swap costs dropped from $5-12 to $0.50-1.50
  • OpenSea: NFT minting now costs under $1
  • Aave: Lending/borrowing gas reduced by 85%

“The Pectra upgrade makes Ethereum competitive with Solana on fees while maintaining its security and decentralization,” said Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake.

Account Abstraction

The biggest user-facing change is account abstraction. Users can now:

  • Pay gas fees in any ERC-20 token (USDC, DAI, etc.)
  • Set up gasless transactions sponsored by dApps
  • Execute batched operations in a single transaction
  • Use social recovery for wallet security

This removes one of the biggest friction points for new crypto users.

Market Reaction

ETH surged 12% in the 24 hours following the upgrade, reaching $4,200. DeFi total value locked (TVL) increased by $8B as lower fees attract more capital to on-chain protocols.

What’s Next

The next upgrade, “Fusaka,” is scheduled for Q1 2027 and will introduce statelessness — allowing nodes to verify transactions without storing the full blockchain history.
