Rust has officially overtaken Python in enterprise adoption for the first time, according to the 2026 Stack Overflow Developer Survey released this week.
The Numbers
- Rust: 52% of enterprise developers use it regularly (up from 38% in 2025)
- Python: 49% (down from 54% in 2025)
- Go: 45% (stable)
- TypeScript: 72% (still #1 overall)
The shift is driven primarily by AI infrastructure companies adopting Rust for performance-critical systems. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cohere all use Rust for their inference servers.
Why Rust is Winning
The performance advantage is clear. Rust’s memory safety without garbage collection makes it ideal for:
- AI inference servers handling millions of requests
- Cloud-native infrastructure (Kubernetes operators, service meshes)
- Edge computing where every millisecond counts
- Blockchain/Crypto projects prioritizing security
“We switched our entire inference stack from Python to Rust,” said a senior engineer at Anthropic. “Latency dropped 60% and we eliminated an entire class of memory-related crashes.”
Python Isn’t Dead
Python remains dominant in data science, ML research, and education. Jupyter notebooks, pandas, and scikit-learn still make Python the go-to for prototyping. But the production layer is increasingly Rust.
The survey also noted that developers who learn Rust report higher job satisfaction (87%) compared to other languages.
What’s Next
Several major frameworks are adding Rust backends. PyTorch now has experimental Rust bindings, and Hugging Face released rust-tokenizers for production inference. The trend suggests Rust will continue gaining ground in 2027.
