Gartner published its Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2027 on Oct. 20 at its IT Symposium/Xpo in Orlando. The annual outlook covers developments the research firm expects technology leaders to consider as AI systems become more capable and autonomous. [1] [2]

AI moves beyond text

Three trends extend AI into new forms of reasoning. Large quantitative models combine neural networks with modular methods for numerical data and simulation. Speech reasoning models are intended to work directly with audio, preserving context and intent rather than relying only on a transcript. World models represent space, time and cause-and-effect so a system can simulate possible outcomes before acting. These are Gartner’s descriptions of technology directions, not claims that every capability is mature or broadly deployed. [1] [3]

Four other trends concern the operating controls around AI agents: AI context platforms, an AI coding-agent harness, AI agent identity and autonomous exposure remediation. Gartner describes these as ways to provide agents with relevant business context, verify generated code, associate identities and credentials with runtime actions, and identify and address security exposures. [1] [3]

Forecasts are not present-day measurements

Gartner forecasts that semantics in AI-ready data could raise agentic-AI accuracy by up to 80% and reduce costs by up to 60% by 2027. It also predicts that AI-agent abuse could be tied to 25% of enterprise security breaches by 2028. These are Gartner estimates, not observed current rates or guaranteed outcomes. [1] [2]

The remaining trends are SovereignTech, disposable applications and wetware as a service. Gartner frames SovereignTech around preserving options to move away from critical providers. Disposable applications are purpose-built systems designed to be retired after their job is done. Wetware as a service refers to remote access to living or synthetic biological systems for computation; Gartner presents it as an emerging concept, not an established enterprise platform. [1] [3]

Taken together, the list emphasizes both new AI capabilities and the organizational controls needed to use them. The forecasts and emerging concepts remain forward-looking, so companies will need to test their relevance and maturity before treating them as procurement plans.
